Insulated Concrete Forms are an alternative to conventional forming systems that are becoming more popular. Here at Gendron building we began installing ICF foundations in 2003 and have watched their popularity grow each year. They can be used from the simpliest applications such as a small addition to a house or for more complex projects that involve building all the way to the roof. As ICF blocks gain in popularity manufacturers have been working hard to produce a product that can be used on even the most challenging foundation plans.
Here are some advantages of using ICF blocks.
Although building with ICF blocks has become more popular, common practice in our area has been to construct only the basement with ICF's. While this may offer some benefits, they're actually designed for and give the most cost savings when used above ground.
Here is an example of an above ground application.
Many customers have three main concrens with ICF blocks.
Constructing a standard basement with ICF blocks will cost more than building with a traditional forming system. However, your foundation will have a higher energy efficiancy rating than a typically poured founation.
If you decide to build above ground the cost compared to building a stick built house is very similar and you actually gain from the money saving benefits down the road.
The time needed to build either a basement or a house with ICF blocks will change your schedule very little or not at all.
Assuming you use a company such as ours that has installed ICF foundations and have had the training to complete such projects your foundation will be as durable as a standard foundation. If you choose to build above ground your house will be stronger than a traditional stick built house.
We use the Amvic styrofoam block system. If you have anymore questions or would like to learn more contact us or click on the link below.
